A superb example of a very rarely seen large-scale miniature – this one is a large half size engine which is particularly impressive!
Bought by the owner and builder as a set of castings and boiler many years ago; this completed traction engine is the result of a meticulous, long-term project. Since completion in around 2021 (the first hydraulic test was 04/08/2021), it has been maintained and perfected by the owner to become a reliable and free-running engine.
Key Features:
- The welded steel boiler was commercially made by well-known makers Franklin & Bell in 2000. The original material certification and certificate of conformity are present, as are the boiler inspections since the initial boiler inspection in 2021. They have been conducted by a well-known examiner with the 10-yearly hydraulic valid until 2031 and the steam test due to expire in June 2025 – this one is available for a swift handover should the buyer wish to use it straight away!
- A single-cylinder, four-shaft, 2-speed arrangement with a slide valve actuated by a Stephenson’s linkage.
- Mechanical water pump and steam injector fitted for filling the boiler when in steam, as standard.
- Benefits from being constructed with a stainless-steel tender and ashpan. The owner made it with longevity in mind.
- Steam whistle, mechanical lubricator, and pressure release valves, as expected. Also a dummy set of Pickering-style governors.
- Well-built to a high standard throughout. It has been maintained well and comes out as a large half size engine. The finish is good, and the builder is clearly accomplished.
- The paintwork is in good condition. It is hand painted (and visibly so) but it’s smart and it looks the part with full signwriting throughout.
- The wheels are on original metal strakes, adding to the impression that this a largely prototypical miniature. The wheels are fully riveted adding to the efforts made to make the whole engine feel authentic.
- Removable double seat – it looks authentic with it removed but is very practical with the seat fitted.
- Includes a half-day tuition session, if requested by the buyer.
Overall, an impressive large-scale miniature traction engine. It will comfortably seat two for driving and has enough weight to be fun to drive. Although a large miniature (see dimensions below the photos), it is still very manageable and would fit in a typical garage. It is nicely made and clearly hasn’t seen much heavy work since completion!
