4″ Scale Garrett Traction Engine S3790

Model Type General Purpose Traction Engine
Boiler Construction Welded Steel
Boiler Maker Non-commercial – Bill Newcombe with full papers
Boiler Year 2011
Condition Room for Improvement but in steam and serviceable
Asking Price £15,995

An in-steam and useable example of the robust and sought-after 4″ scale Garrett Traction Engine, based on the 7NHP general purpose prototype. This one has a recorded history with the records suggesting the boiler was built non-commercially in 2011. Since then, it changed hands in part-finished condition and has been added to by the previous owner. In our opinion, it isn’t quite over the line and looks scruffy around the edges however it is serviceable. We understand the engine is largely to the well-respected Bill Newcombe design of miniature
.

Key Features:

  • The welded steel boiler was made, non-commercially, in around 2011. Whilst not extensive, it has sufficient documentation to continue with its boiler testing as needed. We would be happy to include a new commercial boiler inspection if requested – feel free to speak to us about this one. The boiler itself is sound and clean.
  • A single-cylinder, 2-speed arrangement with a slide valve actuated by a Stephenson’s linkage.
  • Mechanical water pump and steam injector fitted for filling the boiler when in steam, as standard.
  • Mechanical lubricator, and pressure release valves, as expected.
  • Built to a reasonable standard throughout. As mentioned, this one can be steamed and used but offers the buyer room for improvement. We have priced this one accordingly.
  • Similar to the mechanical condition noted above, we have priced this one according to the paintwork needed to bring it up to standard. Whilst presentable, it offers cosmetic room for improvement.
  • The wheels are on original metal strakes and generally the engine sits nicely – it is a good size and somewhat less common that its Burrell or Foster-based counterparts. It is registered for use on the road with a V5C.
  • Includes a half-day tuition session, if requested by the buyer.

Overall, an honest 4″ scale Garrett which, with some time spent, would make for a smart and unusual 4″ scale traction engine! It is to be offered with our standard, 3-month warranty on the caveat that it is for major issues only as we have priced according to the work required to bring it up to our usual standard.
