4″ scale Foster Traction Engine SOLD

Model Type Traction Engine
Boiler Construction Welded Steel
Design Live Steam Models (Filby)
Boiler Maker Bell Boilers
Road Registered? No
Boiler Year 2007
Condition Ready to go
New Asking Price SOLD

Offered for sale is this smart 4″ scale Foster traction engine to the popular Live Steam Models (Filby) design. Judging from the paperwork, the boiler was ordered in c. 2005 from Bell Boilers with invoices for subsequent parts and castings dated between 2005 and 2008. From what we understand, whilst it was certainly steamed, it wasn’t used for long before ending up as part of a deceased estate and left in storage for a number of years.

Key Features:

  • Welded Steel Boiler commercially made by Bell Boilers. It looks in good order with good plate thicknesses and clean inside. It doesn’t look to have been used in public so has no boiler reports however does have the original documents from Bell Boilers. We intend on including a fresh commercial hydraulic and steam inspection within the sale.
  • Two-speed, single cylinder arrangement to the popular Live Steam Models design. Slide valve actuated by Stephenson’s linkage.
  • Mechanical water pump and injector fitted for filling the boiler when in steam, as standard.
  • Mechanical lubricator, steam whistle and Ramsbottom type pressure release valves. The dummy governor is also present but missing the weights.
  • Winch drum, with wire.
  • Mechanically, the engine has been built to a high standard throughout. It looks to have only seen a little use with plenty of life in the bearings. We will give it a check over prior to handover to ensure nothing is outstanding following its period out of service.
  • Cosmetically, the paintwork is simplistic in the tradition green livery. The lining isn’t to a particularly high quality and is peeling in places – it looks as if it could be a tape which may peel/polish off. It provides an excellent foundation for someone looking to make their mark!
  • The wheels are fitted with (still sharp!) metal strakes. It is not currently registered for road use.

Overall, a nicely built miniature which would make an ideal beginners engine! It offers a sound foundation with potential for the buyer to either enjoy it as it is or to make their mark on it cosmetically.
