Miniature Road Steam

An example of the popular 4 1/2″ scale Burrell single cylinder traction engine built using casting and drawings to the design by H. R. Plastow and supplied today by Bridport Foundry. A slightly earlier build, this one is recorded as having been built in 1988. A recent inspection (2021) notes that the previous recorded hydraulic was in 1994, suggesting there was a possible period of inactivity or unrecorded use. Regardless, the boiler today is in a presentable condition with good thickness readings.

It is a well-assembled miniature which has been maintained well yet, being a little older, manages to capture the charm of an original traction engine.

Key Features:

• The welded steel boiler with copper tubes was made in 1988 and is accompanied by the expected documentation from the time. We would be happy to include a new commercial boiler inspection if requested.
• A single-cylinder, 2-speed arrangement with a slide valve actuated by a Stephenson’s linkage.
• Mechanical water pump and steam injector fitted for filling the boiler when in steam, as standard.
• Steam whistle, mechanical lubricator, and pressure release valves, as expected.
• Well-built to a high standard throughout. It has been maintained well with many nice features not found on every miniature. The finish is good and it was clearly build by an accomplished engineer.
• The paintwork is in good condition. It successfully captures the charm of an original traction engine without looking tired – it polishes up nicely and looks the part with a traditional livery.
• The wheels are on original metal strakes, further adding to the impression that this a largely prototypical miniature. It is registered for use on the road with a V5C.
• Includes a half-day tuition session, if requested by the buyer. 

Overall, a nicely presented, honest miniature Burrell traction engine!
