This is something of a rarity! A 1 1/2″ scale Burrell single crank compound. Built by a hobby-engineer turned professional model engineer Mr M Paine in around the 1980s, the intention at the time was to make five examples to sell them on as a full-time job. Unfortunately, the venture never quite took off however this miniature is one of the small number which was completed at the time.
It has been kept in ‘as finished’ condition and looks to have never been fired. It is virtually complete although, for completeness, would benefit from a sight glass and pressure gauge. Whilst a potentially steamable model, the intricate detail means this one would likely be better suited as a high-quality display engine.
Key Features:
- Copper boiler built originally by the maker. There is no boiler paperwork included, as would be expected of an early copper boiler miniature which has never been fired. We don’t typically include commercial boiler testing within the sale of miniatures of this scale. Feel free to contact us regarding options going forward.
- Two-speed, single crank compound cylinder arrangement. Slide valve actuated by Stephenson’s linkage.
- Mechanical, crank driven water pump.
- Locomotive type pressure release valves craftily disguised as Ramsbottom-type. It is accompanied by a cylinder lubricator which is not currently fitted.
- Other notable features include a winch drum, dummy lamps, working brake and running board.
- Mechanically, the engine has been built to high standard with a good level of attention to detail. It has clearly been kept in a clean, dry environment so is beautifully presented.
- Cosmetically, it is painted to a high standard in traditional, simplistic livery.
- The wheels are fitted with metal strakes, typical of this type of working engine. Whilst likely powerful enough to drive around (we’ve not tried!), we suggest that this scale of miniature would be better enjoyed on a bench or similar, if the decision was made to steam it.
Overall, a pleasant miniature which is accompanied by copied newspaper clippings giving some idea of its origin.
