An unusual opportunity to own an ex-college stationary gas engine from c. 1920.
This large, open crank, single cylinder engine is complete. We understand it was restored some years ago and has some clear indicators that, prior to its previous ownership, it was a college engine for running tests. The solid style flywheel is typical of ex-college engines, as is the indicator fitted along with the pressure gauge. The paperwork accompanying the engine is of interest in that it contains copies of a science experiment, using this engine, from Swindon College. We also have a series of blueprints, a copy of an original owner’s manual from Crossley and a superb photograph (we presume of this engine but perhaps another) of it in situ in the college surrounded by full test equipment.
We presume the engine was removed from the college and subsequently mounted on the pleasant wooden trolley with the water drum and original gas regulator for display. We don’t believe it has been run for some time but all the indicators are there that it should start readily. The only part we are missing is a starting handle.
It is an intriguing engine which would have originally run on town gas. It is fully open crank so would make a good display. It is also a larger engine with a spoked flywheel diameter of around 3ft.
