We are pleased to offer for sale, on behalf of the owners, Marshall No. 70081 ‘Róbhán’. This 12NHP Portable Engine was restored with a completion in around 2016. Sadly, since restoration was completed, it has been laid up outdoors. Fundamentally, it is good order however suffering from the expected issues of an engine being laid up outdoors for a sustained period of time.
No. 70081 is a fundamentally good example of Marshall’s formidable 12NHP portable steam engine. Made new in 1916 and, we understand, shipped straight to Ireland. In preservation, following a long ownership by respected a respected steam man in Ireland, the decision was made to restore No. 70081 on its 100 year birthday. The owner was a diligent engineman and restorer meaning that renovation was conducted to a high standard throughout.
Sadly, the late owner and restorer passed away not long after completing it and, since 2016, No. 70081 has resided where it was left until the recent decision was made to find a new home by the family.
We have visited No. 70081 and can report that, as per description, we agree with the quality of the rebuild. It has a Marshall patent firebox crown and, from no more than a cursory look, the boiler looks to be as described. Unfortunately, it hasn’t yet been possible to find the papers associated with the boiler, either modern or predating the rebuild. We understand it is likely the papers are present and efforts are being made to ensure they are included with the sale. As with the sale of any steam engine or locomotive, we always strongly recommend buyers employ the services of their own boiler inspector to take independent advice prior to completing a purchase of this nature.
As with any engine left outdoors as photographed, the motionwork, although freshly restored has deteriorated and is no longer free to move by hand. We are confident that it could be free fairly quickly and that this could be a considered more of a recommissioning project, rather than a restoration.
Being one of Marshall’s larger single cylinder engines, it is a twin flywheel example. It is a big engine with the top of the firebox outer sitting at around 6ft from the ground. We found the majority of removed fittings in the workshop, including an A-frame, which would be included in the sale.
In summary, it is a 12NHP, single cylinder, slide-valve portable requiring work to return to service. A worthwhile and likely rewarding project!
