Offered for sale on behalf of the owner from our premises near Exeter, this impressive 15 ton roller is a product of Loire, France in 1913. It utilises a Burrell-style Single Crank Compound cylinder block to provide power to the robust engine. Offered for sale in need of a replacement inner firebox, it is an appealing project at an attractive price which would yield a worthwhile steam roller!
A unique roller, the French firm of Chataignier only produced this example with the SCC cylinder block. This engine is one of only 3 examples of Chataignier engines known to have survived. The cylinder block is of Burrell type, believed to have been cast under licence from Burrell being subject to their renowned SCC patent.
In its 111 years since leaving the Chataignier works, it has been all over Europe, reputedly working originally in France before ending up in the Netherlands where it was taken over by the Americans after World War II (note the weight plate stating 12 tons put on at this time by the American army – it is in fact closer to 15 tons!).
In the late 1980’s/ early 90’s it was in the Automuseum at Assen and attended some rallies before being brought over to the UK from the Netherlands in 2004 by the previous owners. Under their care, it had an extensive overhaul and the maintenance has been kept up with since then.
In recent years it has had axle and bearing work. It is on rubber tyres which help with slipping and with loading onto lorries. The livery is reflective of what it originally would have looked like when new and is a chestnut brown. The engine has differentials, a water pump, is equipped with two water gauge glasses and has the original Chataignier pressure gauge together with a very spacious footplate and full metal canopy. Overall, it is an impressively well-built roller.
In terms of the current boiler condition; an inspection carried out in March 2022 identified that it will need a new inner firebox before returning to steam. The mudhole doors are out at the moment and the steamroller will be supplied with a full set of seals to match those taken out.
Fire irons are also included as well as sheeting. No. 141 will also be supplied with the previous Bello nameplate as well as the new, fitted Bluebell nameplates. Its original name was Ile de France which has not carried since at least the 1980’s. Bluebell is accompanied by a full folder of paperwork detailing research and historical boiler inspections.
