We are delighted to offer for sale, on behalf of the owner, the impressive Aveling & Porter YLD class Road Locomotive No. 8471 ‘Clyde’. One of only eight YLD class Road Locomotives built by Aveling & Porter, No. 8471 is believed to be the only roadworthy YLD-class Road Locomotive in preservation in the UK. Recently restored over the course of 3 years to include the striking War Department livery.
‘Clyde’ was dispatched originally on 5th December 1914 to S. Frampton, Surrey at the start of the First World War. No. 8471 then spent the War hauling three wagons loaded with stable manure, three times a day from the horse lines at Aldershot to Hale. In around 1920, Clyde was sold to Fredrick Smith of Basingstoke who it is believed to have used it for the haulage of bricks from Oxfordshire to Basingstoke to help with building works. Not long after, in 1921, Clyde changed hands again to a Cornish owner who registered it with the distinctive West Country ‘AF’ number plate.
Following a period of less recorded history, Clyde was ‘found’ in the 1960s as part of the collection housed at Alton Towers, Staffordshire. From the collection, Clyde was sold to J. Hardy of Yorkshire who sold it to A. D. Fowler of Hampshire in 1965. In 1978 Clyde was sold to Robert Hyett near Henley-on-Thames. At the sad passing of Robert some years later, it was left to his son, Paul, before being sold to the current owners in recent years. Now kept with the current owners in Dorset, Clyde was subject to a 3-year rebuild starting in 2019 with the help of McKay Engineering in Devon and Sussex Steam Restoration.
The boiler reports are in order and show it to be in good working order with the latest hydraulic having been carried out in 2021. They have been conducted by a reputable inspector and the latest report is available for examination by interested parties by request associated with the intention to view. As with any traction engine or locomotive purchase, we would always encourage prospective buyers to employ the services of their own inspector to review the boiler prior to finalising any purchase.
An impressive 6NHP Road Locomotive of superb proportions, it features the full specification expected of such an engine. A pleasant engine on the road and finished nicely in the striking, and fitting, War Department livery, it is certainly a credit to the restoration team.
‘Clyde’ is available for viewings by appointment only by contacting Berrybrook on 01392 833301 in the first instance.
