We are delighted to offer for sale, on behalf of the owner, Aveling & Porter Road Roller No. 9139, ‘Eventually’. Recent boiler reports show an honest engine which has been well looked after. Nicely presented in a War Department-style livery, it is an attractive roller with a strong, Midlands history.
A true Staffordshire engine, through and through! Supplied new as an Aveling & Porter BS 10-ton steam roller, with an AGE makers plate (still in place), E 5337 spent its working life with Staffordshire Council and was the last engine working for them, retiring in 1976. Its last job was in the village of Waterhouses, on the Staffordshire moorlands, where it was left in the school playground to be played on. It later ended up in the Shugborough museum before being restored to running condition by the previous owner. It was run until around 2008 before being laid up prior to the current owner’s purchase a decade later. It has since been run regularly and enjoyed.
It is the single cylinder, slide valve model, fitted with a differential and tin canopy. ‘Eventually’ is rated at 4NHP with 2-speeds and a plated weight of 10 tons. It had a replacement firebox towards the end of its working life in the 1960s which, according to the in-depth boiler report, looks to be faring well – as does the rest of the boiler. As with any traction engine or locomotive purchase, we would always encourage prospective buyers to employ the services of their own inspector to review the boiler prior to finalising any purchase. In recent years, it has been subject to standard maintenance including new small and big end bearings and a pump overhaul. The paintwork is smart in the War Department livery and No. 9139 was a feature at the 2022 Wartime display at the Great Dorset Steam Fair.
Overall, an appealing and honest steam road roller with a pleasant history. A nicely presented engine which would no doubt bring enjoyment to any future owner.
‘Eventually’ is available for viewings by appointment only by contacting Berrybrook on 01392 833301 in the first instance.
