We are delighted to offer for sale, on behalf of the owner, this charming 8-ton Aveling & Porter C-Type roller. Although currently in steam with a valid inspection, it has its original boiler and the feedback from the current inspector suggest that it is coming towards a boiler overhaul. Regardless, it is a charming engine which would be a worthwhile rebuild.
‘Buster’ was supplied new to Eddison Steam Roller Co. in December 1922 and listed as fleet number 437 of the Epsom depot. Aveling & Porter No. 10465 was later licenced until 1964 at Kesteven County Council’s offices before ending up with the Maidstone Corporation, Kent with the intention of becoming a ‘playground roller’. This plan never materialised and it was later sold untouched in the condition it finished work in.
After changing hands a couple more times, it was bought by the current owner in 2016 and has since been subject to both cosmetic and mechanical work. The Allen scarifier has reputedly been on ‘Buster’ for its whole life. Some of the history is recorded in a folder which accompanies this sale and includes copies of a buff logbook, copies of the original order form made out to The Eddison Steam Rolling Co., Dorchester, and a couple of contemporary photos and news clippings. The folder also includes boiler testing in recent years and a V5C with the correct, historically accurate registration number.
Following purchase in 2016, some light boiler work was conducted to bring No. 10465 back into steam. The most recent hydraulic examination was conducted in February 2018 and is accompanied by an in depth report of readings and a summary of the current condition. The current steam examination expires in August 2024. The report suggests that the boiler is getting long in the tooth and, whilst the light work conducted in 2016 helped tide it over, it is assumed to be the original boiler so is likely due an overhaul soon. As with any traction engine or locomotive purchase, we always encourage prospective buyers seek the services of an independent inspector to review the boiler to satisfy themselves of the condition prior to purchase.
The rest of the engine is in good order. It steams freely and drives nicely – the drive train is good and the gears look very good. The paintwork has been done to a high standard and makes it stand out as a well looked after roller! It is a 2-speed, 8-ton C-type with a single cylinder and piston valve. An overall appealing engine which the owner has enjoyed using for the past few years.
